Dürnstein Ruins – History you can touch

Perched high on a rock above the Danube are the ruins of Dürnstein, the former main castle of the Kuenringer family. The castle became famous for the capture of Richard the Lionheart in 1192, who spent several months in prison here. Built in the mid-12th century, the castle survived many attacks and was virtually impregnable until the 17th century. The legendary resistance against Frederick III in 1458 testifies to the castle's strength. However, in 1645, it could not repel a Swedish attack and was destroyed.

Today, the Dürnstein ruins are a popular tourist destination. The hiking trail up to the ruins leads through vineyards and offers breathtaking views of the Danube Valley. From the remains of the castle, you can enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding area. Other nearby attractions include Dürnstein Castle, Dürnstein Abbey, and the romantic old town.
